1980s
National Humanitarian Award
National Jewish Health, the global leader in the research and treatment of respiratory, immune and related diseases, awarded its National Humanitarian Award to Larry A. Mizel in 1987 in recognition of his philanthropy, particularly in the healthcare sector.
1990s
Honorary Dean
In 1996, to pay tribute to his contributions in the homebuilding industry, as well as his ongoing support of higher education, Larry A. Mizel was named Honorary Dean of the University of Denver’s Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management.
Early 2000s
Ellis Island Medal of Honor
In 2001, Larry A. Mizel was named a recipient of the distinguished Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which pays tribute to the immigrant experience and individual achievement. Honorees are listed in the Congressional Record.
Honorary Colonel
Larry A. Mizel was made an Honorary Colonel of the 88th Regiment of the Army in 2003 for his creation of the Victims of Terror Fund, which provided funds to many people impacted by the devastating events of 9/11.
Defenders of Freedom Award
In 2005, Larry A. Mizel received the Defenders of Freedom Award from the National Homeland Defense Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to securing freedom in the fields of homeland defense and security.
Honorary Irishman
In 2002, Larry A. Mizel was awarded the title “Honorary Irishman” by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a Catholic-Irish-American Fraternal Organization founded in 1836, for his work in supporting the heroes of the 9/11 attacks.
Kempe Community Award
In 2006, Larry A. Mizel and David D. Mandarich were named Kempe community honorees. David is pictured with Kempe Foundation board members, Walt and Georgia Imhoff, past recipients of the Kempe Award.
2010s
Business Achievement Award
As a nonpartisan think tank working for global prosperity through collaboration, The Milken Institute strives for innovation in business and philanthropy. In 2011, Larry A. Mizel received the Steve Ross Business Achievement Award from the Milken Institute for his “visionary leadership that consistently meets and overcomes business and financial challenges.”
Special Trustees Award
In 2010, Larry A. Mizel was awarded the Ben S. Wendelken Special Trustees Award by Colorado’s El Pomar Foundation for embodying the spirit of service and giving through his life’s work.

In 2016, Larry A. Mizel was inducted into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame in recognition for his business acumen, vast philanthropic endeavors and countless contributions to the state of Colorado and the homebuilding industry.
2016 Noel and Tammy Cunningham Humanitarian Award
Larry A. Mizel was awarded Volunteers of America® Colorado Branch’s highest honor in 2016. The award recognizes philanthropists for their generosity to VOA and other worthy organizations. This honor was received at the annual Western Fantasy gala event at the National Western Events Center.
2020s
2024 Navy SEAL Foundation Fire in the Gut Award
Mizel was awarded the 2024 Fire in the Gut Award by the Navy SEAL Foundation for his extensive contributions to military and veteran support. The award was presented during the Navy SEAL Foundation’s Denver Evening of Tribute, where Senator Michael Bennet read a tribute for the Congressional Record.
